JEWELLERY CARE

When you come across an advertisement claiming that their jewellery does not tarnish, we want to be transparent with you that it's not entirely true. The longevity of your jewellery is dependent on how well you take care of it. That's where we come in - we're here to provide guidance on jewellery care routine. It's crucial to store each jewellery piece individually, ideally in your YOJ box or pouch to prevent rubbing, scratching, or tangling. Additionally, ensure that you keep your chains fastened to avoid any entanglement.

To minimise the tarnishing of your jewellery, store it along with a small packet of desiccant crystals. Keep your gold vermeil and silver jewellery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Over time, sterling silver naturally becomes oxidized and eventually tarnishes. Storing your silver jewellery in a sealed plastic bag or an airtight box when not in use prevents air from causing oxidation. Wearing your jewellery often slows down the oxidation process, but if stored for extended periods, occasional cleaning is recommended to maintain shine and keep oxidation at bay.

All of our YOJ sterling silver jewellery is rhodium-plated, providing a layer of protection that minimises long-term tarnishing. It's important to note that your jewellery is susceptible to damage from chemicals present in products like perfume, hairspray, makeup, nail polish remover, body oils, sun tan lotion, and deodorant. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause gemstones to fade and lose their colour, so avoid keeping your jewellery in direct sunlight.

To keep your jewellery shiny, it's important to clean it carefully using a soft, non-abrasive, and lint-free cloth or chamois. In case of stubborn dirt, you can use mild washing-up liquid with warm water and a soft toothbrush, then rinse it with clean water and pat it dry with a soft cloth. Avoid using 'dip' polish or abrasive jewellery cleaners, as they contain harsh chemicals that can damage your jewellery over time.

Never swim or shower while wearing gold-plated or silver jewellery, and try to your remove rings when washing your hands. Chlorine, salt water and fresh water can damage precious metals and gemstones by dulling or eroding them. Gold and silver are particularly susceptible to damage from chlorine, which can permanently damage or discolour them. Soapy water when bathing and showering can also leave. To avoid damaging your precious metals and gemstones, it's important to remove your gold-plated or silver jewellery before swimming or showering and try to remove your rings while washing your hands. Chlorine, saltwater, and freshwater can dull or erode precious metals and gemstones.
